Redbright Institute Open Days

VOTE SYLVIA REDBRIGHT – A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ALL.

Welcome all to the Redbright Institute Open Days! Taking place on 15th and 16th April, this event is an opportunity for prospective employees, students, parents, and other interested parties to take a look around the school and see what it has to offer. Coincidentally, it is also a focal point of the Chancellor Sylvia Redbright's re-election campaign. While Sylvia herself won't be making a speech, there are plenty of volunteers with "I'M VOTING REDBRIGHT" badges around who are happy to convince you to vote for her.

The school is open from 12pm-10pm Friday 15th and Saturday 16th April.

Rules of entry
• No weapons. This is a school, there are children present. Any weapons or objects that could be used as weapons will be confiscated.
• No drugs or alcohol. Obviously. Don't try to sneak any in.
• No violence.

There is security within the school and present during the event. (In fact, if your character is a member of the Redbright Institute, you could have them acting as security if you want.) They will respond to and put a stop to any trouble.

Places to go
When you walk into the reception area, you can pick up a map which shows you where to go and a promotional leaflet outlining the Redbright Institute's fine work both as an educational institution and within the supernatural community.

The busiest area is the large Assembly Hall. Here a number of stands have been set up where you can talk to staff and student volunteers about various aspects of the school. Examples include: Job Opportunities, Student Applications, Evening Classes and Further Education, Equal Opportunities, Pastoral Care, Outreach, Learn About The Night Council, plus various sports and other societies. A giant banner reading "VOTE SYLVIA REDBRIGHT – A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ALL" hangs from the ceiling, while eager supporters offer "I'M VOTING REDBRIGHT" badges to anyone who enters.

Food and drink can be bought from the cafeteria. The drinks are non-alcoholic.

The various academic subjects (all the normal ones like maths, science, history etc) are represented in the classrooms where you can talk to teachers and students about how that subject is taught, see examples of students' work and discuss course options (GCSEs, A-levels, etc).

Head over to the greenhouses, however, and you'll see a very different type of chemistry in the form of creating potions and magical items, as well as lessons in magic. The teachers are happy to demonstrate for the benefit of interested witches.

In the sports hall you can watch a demonstration of students being trained to control and use their powers. These are mostly meta humans with various flashy abilities, but there are others too honing their skills and athletic prowess.

At certain appointed times, you can join a tour of the library. Access is only permitted with supervised groups, but the librarian is very happy to tell you about the wealth of magical and supernatural knowledge contained here.

Finally, as you move around between areas you may find yourself accosted by various students of different political affiliations shoving flyers into your hands or urging you to vote for the candidate of their choice. None of them are allowed to campaign in the main hall and they're moved along very quickly, but it may get a little rowdy.

No, he isn't looking for a change in career paths. If he were he would have done so a long time ago. But he has been in Norrell's employ for two decades, give or take. He would not just walk off the job like this, simply because he does not approve with how the man is handling his business, his politics lately.

"Would you disapprove of the idea that I'd simply fancied a look around?" he asks, with a shrug. "We did not have such an Institute as this, in the North." Perhaps he might have attended it, instead of going into Norrell's employ, if there had been. Of course, that is if they would have accepted one such as himself, without so much as a penny to his name. Certainly no honest penny, at least.

"I wouldn't disapprove," she answers, "I just wouldn't believe. Are you interested in any area in particular?"

If she had to guess, it would be the library, because Norrell is such a hoarder of books.

"The Library, for starters," he says, giving the obvious answer. "It is good to see a collection not yet pilfered from the hands of those who need it most of all." Not that Norrell did not need his books. But he did not need every single copy of every single book on magic, much as though he would like to collect them and hoard them for his own.

"I am open to further suggestions of where I might continue from here, of course," he continues, inclining his head at her. Wondering if she might actually give him any answers of value or whether she'd sooner be rid of him and the acquaintances he carries with him.

"Well, it's hard to give a recommendation without a clear purpose behind it, but I think you may find the activities being demonstrated in the sports hall interesting. It's over to the left if you want to take a look."

She points over his shoulder at the corridor that leads towards the sports hall. Sylvia isn't lying: she thinks he will find the meta humans practising their powers interesting. But it is also a good excuse to get rid of him.

Childermass is hardly unfamiliar with the idea that people might not want to have him stick around for a chat. She wouldn't be the first person certainly. There are those that find his very presence vaguely unsettling, never mind recognizing him for the threat that he might very well be. Norrell may be a very powerful witch, but Childermass is nothing to shake a stick at, and he has a level-headedness to himself that his master will never even hope to attain.

"The sports hall?" he asks, raising an eyebrow at her suggestion. It's clear she would like to see the back of him, but he wants more. Why such a suggestion, and why to him? Is there anything behind it? Might he actually learn something from it. Might as well ask her straight out. Nothing better than learning information straight from the horse's mouth, as they say.

"Students training to use their powers," she says in answer to his unspoken question. "A demonstration, not a real lesson, but it's always fun to see the students let loose a little."

It's usually the most entertaining part of the day, the part that gets the children excited and the parents either excited or anxious. Whether Childermass will appreciate it... Well, she doesn't know. What exactly does he want to get out of this visit? No idea.

Childermass inclines his head, accepting this suggestion. "I agree. It is easier to get to understand something better when they are able to let loose." He wonders if Sylvia herself ever lets loose in front of an audience or whether that is below her. Regardless, Childermass gives her credit for it, to be sure.

"What sorts of students attend such an Institute as this?" he ventures to inquire. "What sorts of classes are offered, towards their educations?" Coming from a man who was never offered a formal education in the arts himself, of course. He had to make do with what he could learn on his own, and where and when he could learn it. Usually in what little free time he was given, from whatever books he could get his hands on in Norrell's library.

More questions. She had thought he might head straight off to the sports hall after she had explained what was going on there. Ah well. Sylvia manages to avoid a sigh, indicating the leaflet that Childermass would have been given upon arrival.

"We're open to any students of a supernatural nature," she explains. "We offer all the usual academic subjects, plus a few special ones designed to develop our students' unique skills. You'll find the complete list in our brochure."

Since when did Childermass ever give the impression that he was an easy man to deal with in regards to anything at all? Just as Sylvia avoids her sigh, so too does Childermass avoid his smirk in response to her obvious attempts to be rid of him.

"How very forward thinking of you," he replies, glancing down at the brochure in question. Yes, he had read it over -- quite extensively at that. "And what about upon graduation? I imagine you are preparing your students for the real world. What direction does the Institute direct them to take from here?"

"That's up to the student. We offer career advice, depending on the student's individual interests and aspirations. We can connect them with other supernatural employers in London or outside. There are also some who choose to stay with us and start their career at Redbright."

Teaching is a noble profession, after all. Some of the instructors here were once students. So far she hasn't told him anything that he couldn't have read in the brochure.
