Alex pulled the brownies out and turned the oven off. The box had said something about sticking a toothpick in to see if they were done all the way through, but she didn't see any toothpicks lying around and she didn't want to go poking through the drawers and cabinets looking for some. She grabbed a knife instead and started cutting out squares. That she could actually do without risk of wrecking them or the kitchen or hurting anybody.

She glanced up at him as he entered, and smiled cockily. "Yeah, I'm a real pro at turning off the oven."
