Stroke of Midnight [OPEN]

Miss Abigail Widdowson cordially invites you to Geap Manor on Wednesday, July 1st at 19:00.

Food, drinks, and music will be provided.

All are welcome, but individuals are to be aware that any hostilities during the evening's festivities will not be tolerated.

It is the first time in at least a generation that the doors of Geap Manor have been opened to the general population. Or, at least, as general as the supernatural community could be considered. Some invitiations were made personally, but most were formally sent to the higher ranking members of the various factions.

Dinner is announced precisely at 19:30. The small, intimate eating area for the family has been turned into a buffet room. The caterers Abigail hired have obviously been paid well to make sure there is something for everyone. Rich meat dishes, hearty vegetarian dishes, light fish dishes, plenty of accompaniments and finger food. There is also plenty of fairly fresh blood for vampires. For the others, there are wines, water, and tea available.

The grand dining room has had its large table removed, replaced, instead, by small tables that can comfortably hold four. They can, of course, be pushed together to allow for more room.

The ballroom is open to the guests, and the DJ has also been highly paid to make sure the music played is precisely to the hostess's tastes. There is plenty of modern music, good for dancing, as well as older classics. However, interspersed are classical pieces meant for waltzes and foxtrots and other such ballroom dances.

In the sitting room is a drink cart with wine, tea, water, and blood. Chairs and divans are available, as the room is a quiet place, a little away from the ballroom, so conversation can be had with ease. There is an unlit fireplace, and a portrait of Abigail a few years younger than she is now hangs above it.

Most of the rest of the house is locked. One can wander the hallways, but it may prove ultimately fruitless. One who simply walks up the stairways will find the walls of each lined with the Widdowson family portraits of every generation, starting with one of a ten-year-old Abby, her parents, and her six-year-old brother. As one takes in all the paintings, a pattern presents itself. Every Widdowson woman featured is pale, thin, and blonde.

The grounds are beautifully maintained and fenced in by wrought iron on top of stone. A very traditional look for such an imposing manor. On the path from the street to the house, there's little remarkable, save the knocker on the door. Behind the house, however, if one ventures away, one might get the keen sense of something from inside the house watching, waiting, and hungering. On the ground floor, the locked rooms are mostly unremarkable, save for the study at the back of the house. Linger too long near there, and one might hear a sound coming in a pattering set. It isn't a knock against the door, no. Instead, it is the sound of something hitting the wall. If someone were to force their way into the nursery on the second floor or the attic several stories up... Well. They likely won't be coming back to the party. Or to anything.

Wandering, of course, isn't a suggested enterprise. The old house doesn't like people poking around and trying to find its secrets.

(Everyone who has at least a familiarity with the supernatural is welcome, as the invitations were distributed widely. Mingle, make your own top comments, enjoy the food, etc!)

"Sirius? Like the dog star? I know a guy who'd get a kick outta that, I bet." Bit unusual, but it was better than River or Moon Unit for sure.

"So what brings ya out here? Not just the food, I bet."
constantprisoner: (respectable)

no worries

"Yes, like the star. Bit of a tradition in my family," Sirius said with a slight sigh. He was fond of his name, but some of his family's conventions were a little ridiculous.

"Well, the food's part of it since it's excellent. But mostly the community. I've been away for a while, and trying to reintegrate."
detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: yeah!)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-16 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like a cool tradition to have. Better than havin' five kids all named George Foreman, anyhow." Heiji snagged a bite of appetizer off a convenient tray and chewed thoughtfully.

"You're in the same boat as a lotta folks, seems like! So when'd you leave, and why'd you decide to come back? Is it about the same as when ya left?"
constantprisoner: (respectable)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-17 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm hoping that's just an example," Sirius replied with slight disbelief. Otherwise he'd feel very sorry for those kids.

"Left several years ago, but I missed the city and wanted to come back. Most of it seems the same, if busier than I remember."

detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: let's do it)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-17 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Nope," said Heiji cheerily. "Totally happened. It's that fella that sells those cookin' grills. Ever seen of 'em? He's pretty famous, used to be a boxer."

He nodded along as Sirius explained his reasons for returning. "Yeah, I can get the whole missing where ya moved from thing. I mean, I think about my hometown a lot."
constantprisoner: (maruader)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-18 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
"The name does seem vaguely familiar, now that you mention it." Granted he'd never paid a whole lot of attention to boxing.

"Where are you from?"
detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: there there)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-18 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Me? Osaka, Japan." Heiji beamed at Sirius, clearly pleased to be discussing this topic.

"Of course, I guess Tokyo'd be more familiar out here. But Osaka has character. Who wants to spend all day dealin' with crowds and traffic?"
constantprisoner: (respectable)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-19 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Either way, you're quite a ways from home," Sirius remarks. He can't say he's familiar with Osaka, but Japan's definitely a distance. "How'd you end up all the way over here?"

detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: excite)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-20 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aww, my old man kicked me out. Said I was an eyesore and shipped me off here. What a jerk, huh?" What kind of parent would ship their kid off to another country, though, that was the real question here.

"It is pretty far. And them airline seats have no leg room at all. I don't know how people put up with that kinda thing, let alone for hours!"
constantprisoner: (concerned)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-21 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Having never travelled by plane, I can't say I know the feeling but I can commiserate with difficult parents. I ran away from home when I was sixteen," Sirius admits. Granted that had been by choice but he could no longer stand his family and their stuck-up, insular attitude.
detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: whatcha say?)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-21 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Seriously?" Wow, Sirius was like... a delinquent. Possibly a former delinquent, but old habits died hard, right?

"You come back, or was that it?"
constantprisoner: (slightly off)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-23 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Pretty much it. I admit I haven't spoken to them in years, but it's probably for the best. We really didn't get along."

He's probably been well and truly disowned by this point, and really doesn't feel bad about it. That was years ago after all.
detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: what're ya doin?)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-23 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds rough. I'm sorry." Even though Heiji had a bit of a confrontational relationship with his father, he couldn't imagine being wholly divorced from his family.

"So... I guess that makes you the black sheep of the bunch, huh? I hope they come around someday." Of course, he didn't know what the point of contention between Sirius and his family was. But it just seemed too lonely.
constantprisoner: (Default)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-24 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, Black Sheep is probably a good term, and I can only hope that they will."

Granted he considers his parents a lost cause but his brother maybe has a chance. Sirius wonders if he should look him up, see if it's worth reconnecting with him. Still, all things considered the whole situation probably could have been worse.

"Have you been back to Osaka since your dad kicked you out?"

detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: urk)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-24 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Heiji laughed. "Nope, not yet! Actually, I kinda miss it. So I'm gonna go back for a bit in a few weeks. Figured I might as well, right? Get a taste of home, drag a friend or two along with me..."

It occurred to him belatedly that perhaps he shouldn't be talking so freely of home to someone who had left his. "Oh, but... I'm comin' right back, of course. London, ha! It sure is... London."

His inability to lie sometimes made things awkward.

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-26 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sirius had long since made peace with his relationship with his family, so it didn't really bother him that much. He was actually rather proud of himself.

"It is a nice city, but you shouldn't have to rush a visit home, especially if you're going with friends."

detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: haha no way)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-26 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I guess. But it kinda defeats the purpose of gettin' sent somewhere if you don't stay there for a little while, right?" Plus, he might never want to leave again.

"I really miss the okonomiyaki there. Well, the food in general. Even the ridiculous one-way streets."
constantprisoner: (Default)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-27 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Okono-what?"

Sirius would have said something more but the unfamiliar word catches his attention. It's certainly not a kind of food he's heard of before and he's curious.
detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: sigh)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-27 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Okonomiyaki! You never tried it before? It's great! You take some batter, and then you put in a bunch of stuff ya like. Like pork, seafood, scallions, cheese I guess if you're into that..." His mouth was watering just thinking about it.

"Guess it hasn't really caught on over here, though." He sighed, as if this were a great tragedy.
constantprisoner: (respectable)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-28 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
"I guess not, though what happens when you mix the batter and everything else?" The image is still trying to make shape in his mind, possibly an omelet or something similar.

Because it does sound interesting.
detectiveofthewest: (Heiji: free spirit)

[personal profile] detectiveofthewest 2015-07-28 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Deliciousness happens, that's what," said Heiji, spirits clearly lifted just at the though.

"Man, I miss those little hole-in-the-wall joints where you could get some with rice!"
constantprisoner: (respectable)

[personal profile] constantprisoner 2015-07-30 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
"London's a big city. I'm sure there's bound to be one of those. At least I know there's hole-in-the-wall places just about everywhere."

He recalls there were a few he favored with his friends.
