What forms should they take? Roddy was going as a rat, that was easy enough. Since he was a suspect, he shouldn't be hanging around as himself. If Sirius went as a dog, that meant the both of them could hang around as much as they wanted without raising suspicion. It also meant, however, that neither of them would have hands.

"I guess it depends on where we want to check first. If we go to the crime scene, we probably should both be in animal form, since people sniffing around there will draw attention. If we want to go to the guy's house, though...I guess it depends what we want to check there, too. If he left evidence in his car, one of us would have to be in human form to get in, but I can probably get into his house as a rat, no problem. If we got in while they were gone, you could hang out as a dog and start barking if anyone comes home."

So the real question was, where did they think the evidence would be?
