facethewolves: (must be the drugs)

Alex was so used to her life being in danger that it didn't occur to her how upset he might be. She returned the kiss with another smile, still able to sense his worry but not sure how to handle it, and not aware of how serious and sincere it was. People didn't tend to worry over her that much. A small, childishly bitter part of her wondered whether anyone really had since her parents' deaths, before Kyle. She wanted to push back against it, fix it somehow, make it okay, but all she could think to do was echo, "We are."

She didn't like that he might be scared on her behalf, but at the same time, she found it very touching.

"Yeah," she said quickly. She started opening cabinets at random rather than simply asking which one the plates were in. Thankfully there weren't that many, and her search was over in a few seconds. She set the plates on the counter next to the stove and turned back to her bag.

"I got something else at the store." She pulled out a small set of portable speakers and an mp3 player. The only music on it was Russian folk music that she'd gotten from one of her new Russian neighbors in the very Russian neighborhood Natasha had hidden her in, but any music was better than none, and Alex was proud of her purchase. "It's cool, right?"
