Alex took a few sips of water while he prepared the food, enjoying the peace and domesticity. If things were different, he might say he forgot something and she could run to the store to buy it. They could plan their weekend, maybe even plan a vacation. Her thoughts drifted further ahead, to the future she was just beginning to look forward to.
