Childermass could just as easily cast a spell against this man. Do him harm, play a trick on him, or anything besides. But he does not. He is not in the habit of creating trouble for himself if at all possible. If given the opportunity to leave peaceably rather than have this end in some sort of a duel, Childermass understands what the smarter option of the two is.
