It appears James isn't offended by the cavalier toast but then again - he is a defense attorney, usually he's the one doing the offending in the first place. Childermass would be absolutely right about James lamenting the loss of his financial freedoms more than anything else. Funerals - proper funerals - were damned expensive and they were a good way to gain favor with grieving families to have that burden lifted from their own shoulders.
